As the top salesman for his employer, Joe Maggini earned the nickname "Magic". In 1974, he started his own brokerage, Magic Steel and Sales. Greg Alksnis joined Joe in the fall of 1978. As the business grew, the office moved from Joe's basement to an office in Marne, Michigan., By 1989, the two-man brokerage firm had developed into a multi-purpose steel service center as Magic Steel Corporation (MS) and moved to its current location of 4242 Clay Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Over time, Magic Steel grew to meet increased business volumes and customer requirements. Key steps in this growth included:

• 1986 Expanded Warehouse space at Clay Avenue by an additional 61,248 square feet (85,440 total)
• 1987 Installed a new 72" Braner slitter
• 1988 Relocated Offices to new facility on Clay Avenue
• 1990 Added an additional 30,200 square feet of warehouse space to facility
• 1991 Installed a 60"Braner slitter to slit exposed cold rolled and pre paint material
• 1992 Installed a 60" Cincinnati slitter to better service hot rolled customers
• 1996 Installed a 48" Yoder slitter
• 1998 Expanded an additional 55,800 square feet and re configured material flow in plant to minimize material travel (Total Building size -= 181,948 square feet)
• 1999 Magic Transportation was spun off from Magic Steel in order for Magic Steel to more effectively utilize its fleet of fifteen trucks
• 2000 Installed a state of the art robotic packaging line.
• 2002 Entered into partnership with Magic Coil Products, LLC
• 2003 Purchased and installed a new state of the art 72" Braner dual loop turret head slitting line with belt bridle tensioning unit and cluster leveler for the slitting of highly exposed flatness critical applications.
